I always thought an orange in the Christmas stocking was our quirky family tradition but today’s NYT Mini has me wondering. Does anyone else do a single orange in the stocking?

Yep! When I was little it was an orange and as I got into teens years it became "something to contribute to the meal" (potato/onion/orange/apple) and in my 30s, when I started hosting some years, it went back to an orange.

No oranges in stockings but I always buy tons of halo tangerines and share with my adult kids at Christmas

Grew up and continued with my family. Also walnuts and Hershey Kisses.

We have always received an orange or Clementine in the toe of our stockings. I think perhaps part of this tradition came about because citrus is available in December historically.
