The original meaning of being Latin has largely been lost in the United States. Many Americans mistakenly believe that Latin America derives its name from its people rather than from the linguistic and cultural influence of Latin-based languages. In reality, there are many Latin nations around the world, including 10 in Europe, 8 in Africa, and 2 in Asia, where Romance languages—descendants of Latin—continue to be spoken.

Let's be honest; Latin Europe is some recent claim... also, and this is for USA, and USA ONLY; now that we have the president we are going to have I bet my cash that all "Latin Europeans" are gonna stop calling themselves Latin/latine/latinx and are going back to their original nationality, because that means privilege in country that discriminates against latinos/hispanics.

Just to remind everyone here that the English language has over 70,000 words from French and many more from Latin, around 60% of English words are from Latin which is quite close to other languages considered "Latin".. just saying, if the term Latino is based on Latin language influence in a language, in fact almost all European languages have to a certain degree Latin words and influence.

In fact, Latins should only be Europeans who have a Romance language (i.e., a descendant of Latin) as their language. People born in Central and South America should be called "Ibero-Americans" (since the colonial powers were based in the Iberian Peninsula) and, of all of them, the majority, with the exception of Brazil, are Hispanic-Americans, having depended on the kingdom of Spain.
