Why do some people in the UK find it necessary to say “Ni Hao” to East Asian on the street just for the sake of saying it? I found it idiotic.

tbh some were trying to be nice just in a wrong way and some were stereotypical and it is definitely a true scenario I experienced it before tho not too common

I am not in the UK, and I only accept this phrase from actual first language speakers.

It's not just exclusive to East Asians, I have heard people say “Gday” to Australians. In different languages, there are many different ways to greet someone and in the UK this can differ from region to region. I am curious why you find it idiotic to try to greet someone in their native language.
