PNW Threads who has driven through the Siskiyou Pass on i5 in the winter and how bad is it really? Heading up to Portland Oregon in the next few days, I’ve got AWD but have never driven mountain passes in winter conditions 🫣 Tips appreciated or anything for peace of mind!!!

It was no big deal compared to taking I-90 to Spokane and back, but checking the forecast right before you go is a good idea. Make sure your tires are at least All-Seasons (or snow) and maybe consider keeping a set of AutoSock "chains" in your car just in case.

It just really depends on the weather conditions, they have cameras you can check out online as well. During winter, I’d recommend trying to hit the pass in early afternoon, definitely not early morning or after dark. If the weather is too bad, just go up 101.

It can be nerve wracking, but I remind myself that my dad used to drive these roads in a 1970s VW bug with bald tires. Best practices: Buy chains. Seasonal tires are more important than AWD. If you’re on all-season tires, you may be required to put on chains for certain stretches of road. Go slow. Don’t let the cars behind you pressure you to go faster than what feels safe for you. Keep a bag of kitty litter and a shovel in your car. Keep water, blankets, and food in your car.

Check ODOT sute prior to leaving. If it hasn’t snowed, you’re good to go.

You should be good with chains!

I live in Ashland. Don’t try crossing the pass after 4 in the winter if weather bad. You don’t want to deal with black ice or snow in the dark. Keep updating yourself weather wise frequently. My son came from SF last week and it was dry pavement all the way over the pass. He was here by 3:00. I’ve driven it literally a hundred times in all kinds of weather. AWD will be very helpful. Watch the other drivers carefully. I ALWAYS carry a set of chains and I have a Honda AWD.
