When "Norwegian" USA'ers on Facebook tell me stuff about my country and language but they keep mixing it up with Sweden or Finland 😂😭 how cute. I answered in Norwegian at last because I got too tired to write my response in English...

I just got told the other day that flat pancakes with blueberry jam is a staple finnish breakfast 😄. I'm a finn and told them no that's not a typical breakfast anywhere in Finland. Their answer "THEN HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN DINER SUCH AND SUCH SERVING THEM IT'S FINNISH LEGACY AFTER ALL". 🙈🙊

We are weird in that way. I am half Norwegian, but there is much about the country I don’t know, and I haven’t been there since I was a baby, despite the fact that my mom’s family is super into being Norwegian and has even preserved the language to an extent. Yet I hear other Americans who are 1/4 or 1/8 Norwegian who tell me about their cultural heritage and all… nice to be interested in one’s ancestors, but it can get pretty pretentious.

Norway is a lovely country and the people are more relaxed and fun than Swedes. I used to go camping in Norway with my parents in the 90’s. The views are something. I’ve been around Trondheim, Lofoten, and Hammerfest. The only negative thing is Norwegians think they are the best in everything. Which is mostly true.

Same with "Finns" with some percentage, when only thing that counts is their nationality. There are no percentages and heritage doesn't matter. Finnish nationality = Finn. One is never "45% Finn".

I am an Italian transplanted in Scotland. I feel more Scottish than I ever felt Italian. I joke that I am an adopted Scot. One day I joked and said that to an American who then started arguing with me that I had no right saying that. That he was 3% Scottish and had more right then me. At that point I cranked up my aberdonian with a dash of Doric and he shut up 😂😂😂😂

It has fascinated me for years why average Americans who have nearly no connection to European countries and ancestry always want to tell people they're "Italian," "Irish," "Norwegian," what have you. No. Unless you have a passport from whichever country you're claiming to be from, unless you speak at least some of the language - just no. You're common Americans of "(whatever) extraction" several generations removed. Get over yourselves and embrace it. Stop trying to be "special."

Same thing with the Polish diaspora in the US. The more they insist in being true and authentic the more amusing the stuff they say becomes.
