Just for perspective, today Mary and Joseph would have to pass through 15 military checkpoints to get from Nazareth to Bethlehem. They would probably stripped searched Mary and detained Joseph for additional questioning and would have destroyed the manger for failing to get permits and settlers would have stole the sheep from the manger because the military would back them up.
