my husband is really great around the house. he cooks, he cleans, he puts things away (most of the time). but the one thing he chronically suffers from is man-searchitis. im confident in saying it’s not weaponised incompetence, bc he’s pretty good at everything else. but somehow, remembering what we own / finding things that are hiding in plain sight is not one of them 🤣 i’m convinced there’s a scientific reason for this lol

It's called attention blindness. In the bleach instance, different brands (in the UK and possibly elsewhere) have different coloured packaging. If you're thinking of the blue brand, you won't notice the yellow one, whereas your partner may know it's the yellow one. It's the same phenomenon when you can't hear someone talking to you when you're engrossed in watching TV or reading.

I'm a teacher. It's usually the boys who can't find their books, pens, whatever. Mainly because it's right in front of them and may or may not be partially hidden by something like a piece of paper. I never ever give in to them. I simply say "looking for something involves lifting things up, looking under and behind. It never involves staring at a space in the hope the lost thing will leap into your hands." They ALWAYS find it. ALWAYS. I cannot deal with that crap x15 for 5 lessons a day.

I once asked my boyfriend if when he’s searching for something he visualizes it like I do. He doesn’t. Apparently he’s blindly looking for a bottle that says “Ketchup” while I’m visualizing what the actual bottle of ketchup we buy looks like. I think that’s the difference, at least for him.

We've been told by loads of influencers like nick fuentes et Al, that looking for "stuff " is gay so women should do it, it's their job.

Sometimes this male blindness is helpful. My husband would never ever take the trouble to open a food container to see what's inside. He either asks or I have to label them. This also means that the easiest way for me to hide in full sight food I don't want him to eat is to place them in a food container.

I raised 3 boys. I became The Finder of All Lost Things. Their dad is the same. They're not incompetent in other ways, they just all have Object Blindness. They simply cannot find the one thing they're searching for...ever. 😁
