Here’s an idea: but an empty property, build some apartments, claim the rent from your tenants and take all the risk yourself. Congratulations! You’re now a property developer and you can make money doing that. Also, remeber you need to pay staff and take risks, like when people don’t pay. All totally doable, just start your own business and do it.

Youre paying for risk and interest mostly.

You’re paying for the right to live on somebody else’s property. If you don’t like to do that, you can buy your own or live under a bridge.

Maintanace, the cost of the land and building, the privelesge to live there, insurance, risk of those not paying, court cost for evictions, profit to the owner and developer so they can build their next property. Buy and you won't pay someone else.

How about, you are paying for a space to house your belongings. Otherwise you can keep them in your car?

What do you mean, what are you paying for? You’re paying for a roof over your head. You’re paying for a place to live.

You’re paying for the right to not have unexpected housing expenses. Rent is a ceiling, a mortgage is the floor. If the roof leaks you can leave. Fire? Walk away. Flood? Move the next day. If you were an owner you’d be responsible for those repairs.

Youre paying that much because the apartment is not yours so you either pay what bossman is asking or just move somewhere where bossman asks less. You pay that much because the owner of the house would rather leave it empty then get paid less so thats simple
