There’s definitely a disparity. I’m not negating that. But most of the time, when I interact with people, they start speaking to me in Portuguese and are really friendly. They usually assume I’m Afro Brazilian until I hit a wall with my Portuguese and explain that I’m American and still learning. It’s always treated warmly and kindly, which feels so different from how things are in the U.S.
