Errrrr… weed? A wild guess. I know Bob Dylan used drugs and wrote magnificently and can’t write like that anymore. They put down the weed, they lost their magic. Oh, and their youthful spirit… has died down. Life gets repetitive and not much shocks you anymore. You stop looking at the details because you’re no longer interested and focus on the bigger picture. You have bigger fish to fry. You’ve made somewhat of a reputation for yourself and can no longer live upto it. Also guesses.

paul had the beatles once that was gone he had linda as a musical partner… seems pretty obvious why it wasn’t as good. paul simon on the other hand never stopped writing at the highest level.

Interestingly, my father who was a chemist, said that great scientists, who maybe went on to win Nobel prizes, were most creative in their twenties. I think at that age you have nothing to lose, want to make a name and also question everything that has gone before. After then, you become influenced by circumstances, your peers and a desire to fit in.

He continues to make good music. The fact that you aren’t aware of this says more about your failure to enjoy music in your codger years.

Interesting responses. Wasn't my intention to degrade Paul's work. It was more of the observation of how as we age we lose the ability to capture society's ear as we once did. Cher was able to have a hit in her 40s and 50s, but most of the bands and artists we all listened have not had the intent or ability to do it. Was kind of wondering why.

McCartney wrote, played every instrument and produced McCartney III aged 78 in 2020. Listen to that and then come back to apologise.

You raise such a good point. It is no slight on Paul McCartney. He is a timeless genius. But it is undeniable that his songs over the last 40 years do not come near his early stuff. Stevie Wonder, Elton John and Billy Joel are other stark examples of this phenomenon.
