One of the research rabbit holes I fell down recently involved sexual practices in colonial America. Most homes didn't have separate bedrooms for the kids during this time, especially on the frontier. Yet, one of every three women getting married was already pregnant, and families had many kids, so where was all the sex happening? 1/3

It turns out that for those who were living on the farm, a lot of sex was happening in the woods. Privacy could be found in the forest. For those who lived in town, the situation was different. Privacy for sex was often sought in graveyards and church buildings. Shopkeepers (especially bakers for some reason) were also known to offer a room for rent for a quick tryst. 2/3

I worked on a 1860 historic site. Upstairs had three bedrooms-the girls bedroom could only be reached through the parents bedroom.

It’s funny how our curse words follow cultural history. The oldest ones in English are literal blasphemy - God this, Jesus that. Then after we started using the bathroom in private, words like piss and shit become more common profanity. Them finally we started having sex in private and words for anatomy and certain acts became taboo.

For those who like podcasts, I recommend "Betwixt the Sheets: The History of Sex, Scandal, & Society," hosted by Kate Lister. I've listened to this podcast for years, and she covers the topic throughout history. The most recent episode discussed whether ancient people had sex toys. It's not a podcast for prudes, so be advised not to listen with prudes around.

I might submit, from my personal experience, that when a lot of sex is allegedly occuring, without much apparent evidence, it is happening in Canada.

Read Clan of the Cave Bear. An old book about a different era for humans but does answer your questions
