One time I accidentally serged over a pin. My anxiety will never allow that a second time.

Not if your stitch length is long enough and your pins are fine enough. I do it whenever I need to accurately match seams in patchwork piecing.

I warn new stitchers to beware those sewing videos that lead you to believe that machine stitching over pins is normal. Sewing over pins can damage both sewing machine needles and the pins ($$). And when the machine needle or pin breaks, the pieces can fly into your eye (unless you are wearing glasses).

I sew over pins at a pretty decent speed, but I also wear eye protection and have a strong machine. I've been doing so for years and the only damage I've ever had was on a cheap machine, the timing got thrown off but was easily fixed. Safety glasses are cheap and so worth wearing for anytime you are doing anything that might break the needle, like going over pins, thick seams, stitching buttons, etc. I think every sewist should have a pair next to their machine!

I’m cool with sewing over pins bc I’m chaotic but I do not like seeing all these viral sewing videos with shit techniques. Like ok it looks cute for the video but you basically just made a bag that will fall apart after a day of use.

I grew up learning from my mom that anything that goes wrong with your machine is from sewing over pins, lol.

I close my eyes tightly every time they sew over a pin. It’s like I’m there and I know how it’s going to end

I hit a pin and jammed it down into the bobbin case. Took me years to get it fixed since I had another machine to use and didn't want to spend the $139 it now costs to get a machine serviced around here.

I hit a pin once and the needle broke and went into my eye. My eyeball bled. Never again.

I don’t take pins out if I use them but I rarely pin anything
