You don’t have to pretend to like bad books, but there’s no need to talk about them, either. It‘s not helpful or constructive to say “your book sucked”, it just makes authors feel sad.

The thing is…the purpose of book reviews is not to provide constructive criticism to authors. My job is not to provide feedback to authors but rather to signal to consumers and readers whether a book is worth reading. I would argue that that in and of itself is incredibly helpful and necessary work. Reviews are for readers and consumers of books. Review spaces aren’t meant for authors.
