It’s especially frustrating when I do take my kid to the pediatrician for this evaluation and all they do is hand me two forms to fill out (one for me and one for her teacher). So all they’re doing is grading a test before they say yay or nay. How is this helpful?? Why can’t we just take our kids to a licensed professional specializing in child mental health to get this diagnosis?

Just wait until the teachers reply seldom/never to all questions on the Vanderbilt & the PCP denies the ADHD dx & then those same teachers complain at you in conferences that your kid doesn't pay attention in class.

Umm, our ped cannot and will not diagnose - even with presumption, The Kid had to get a complete neuropsych eval with Developmental Pediatrics

Because of gatekeeping and ego. There are many that think everyone's seeking diagnosis because of TikTok and therefore withhold referral as though they're personally impacted. If you have PPO insurance you can self-refer though there aren't many in-network that are neuroaffirming. Don't get me started on how many people think schools diagnose and go that route because it's free. Schools determine eligibility for services, the cannot and do not diagnose. TL;dr the whole system is broken.

To be fair, the psych doc also had me fill out those forms. Me and a relative and/or teacher who has spent a significant amount of time with the child. It was summer break so my mom did it. Do you have HMO?

The diagnosis conducted by a licensed professional will give you the very same forms.

My pediatrician did the same thing, and the test was geared towards hyperactive little boys. My daughter was an intelligent tween, hiding her ADHD with her smarts. So obviously the forms were useless. Are you sure you have to go to your PCP? Are you in the US? I took my other child to a psychologist first.

It is because when referring to a specialist(psychiatrist-prescriber of med) they are the ones requesting that info be filled out by the teacher so they know the issues in school since kids mainly take their medications during the school year only. Some PCP’s do manage kids ADD/ADHD but more often than not the psychiatrist will manage and do the follow up appt.

Well.. my kid was evaluated by a behaviorist and they started with pages of questionnaires for me and teachers.

This seems odd. In WA ADD/ADHD is highly regulated and PCPs don’t make the decisions or prescribe meds. Specialist handle that.

The educator forms are important and we are very familiar with them so just bring it to your school counselor or person in charge of IEP’s. Trust me this is no big deal on this end.
