I think that a problem with progressive politics in Australia is that much of the public are far more conservative on federal issues than we on the left would like to admit and it causes us to disengage from the ALP when it tries to take those voters, whose numbers it needs, with them. I think disengaging from Labor is a mistake, because it doesn't punish Labor, it just makes the party weaker and even more moderate because it knows it can't rely on leftist supporters.
