Expansion: yes this is the problem (or one of) of high/low functioning labels. ‘High functioning’ autistics, while often given opportunities that mainstream peers or above got, were often not given support, and it was assumed that they had to fit in, be something they’re not, no questions asked. Meanwhile, ‘low functioning’ autistics were often instititionalised, denied access to education etc. (while also often being refused support)
