If someone had told 21 y.o. me on the eve of 2000 what the US would be like in 2025, I would have laughed in their face. I so distinctly remember sitting in the beach with my friends, watching the sun rise over the Atlantic on Jan. 1, 2000, and thinking what an amazing future we had ahead of us. The stupidity, xenophobia, hate, ignorance, anti-intellectualism, & racism of the 2025 US is shit I never would have believed we were still doing in the future. We’ve really let ourselves down.

Obviously you and I didn’t talk back in 2000. Otherwise, I’d have told you this is where we were headed. But I’ve been telling people this since 1968. And silly me with a simple bs degree in Poli-sci from a midwestern land grant college. I stopped trying to explain Americans at 10:30 pm on the night of Nov. 5th. I’m done. America deserves what ever shit this shit thrower throws at us.

I get it, 2000 felt like a fresh start, but every era has its challenges. Back then, we had xenophobia, ignorance, and racism too it just wasn’t amplified by 24/7 social media and constant outrage. The real letdown is acting like we’re uniquely broken now, instead of acknowledging how far we’ve come and focusing on solutions.

I'm older than you and this shit began way before 2000. We just thought the government still had our backs.

We really let each other down; but it served the oligarchs purpose to let us or even encourage us to behave like that. Just remember we need to defeat both MAGA and the oligarchs!

It saddens me to realize that now I can SEE all of the sad, hateful people in this world that previously had to hide their worst selves. What I do to cope is to try being nice to everyone I meet- hold open a door, chat with the checkout clerk, compliment someone else on anything, meet your neighbors. ResistFascism But I’m ready to fight if that’s what needs to be done.

I'm 74. I have lived thru expansion of equality & rights for women, non-white people, LGBTQ+. I had a friend who died, pre-1973, from a botched abortion. I saw/listened to MLK Jr, JFK, RFK, 1st walk on the moon. Never did I imagine a malignant narcissistic psychopath would be elected twice. I still believe in the USofA. We will overcome the magas, Drumpf, billionaires, & autocratic wannabes.

Our first misstep towards our current hellscape was not having Al Gore as President. That was the first real "what can we get away with" movement.

21 year old you was delusional if you thought all of those things were fading or gone in 2000. They were always there. Social media brought them to the forefront.
