My dad never liked that I married a Japanese-American man. So after my father died and I received a small amount of money from his annuity, I used that to book a family trip to Japan. None of us have ever been, including my husband, and I thought it was important to connect our son with that part of his heritage.

Going back in my 40s made me realize that I am WAY more like my cousins in Spain than the American cousins I have here. It was very comforting to realize I belonged somewhere.
