I've been a people pleaser before, and still am to some degree -- the hard no is still not firmly in my vocabulary. But I've learned to A) lie without lying in order to set boundaries, and B) offer alternatives. In this case, I would have said, "Sorry, I have a rather important appointment in just a few minutes. Maybe you could come by first thing when we open tomorrow? I'll be delighted to see you then." The appointment is nothing more than going home and watching TV, but it's important to me.

How rude. If you see that the lights are off and the door closed then must be closed. Surely can check the opening times

There doesn’t need to be a next time. Either they get out or someone gets called.

At a big-box retail job I worked: we closed the store one night, powered off the sliding doors but left them unlocked so we could leave. We pulled the metal gate down over the doors, but again didn’t lock it. We had closed and counted the registers and were sweeping, stocking, etc. This random man pries the doors open, lifts the gate, grabs a cart, and starts shopping. We’re like “um sir, we’re actually closed?” And he has the audacity to say “it’s ok, you can go back to what you’re doing- 🧵

Your mother needs a lesson in standing up to entitled customers. I'll come and show her how it's done. A firm no and the death stare works every time.

My managers would do this crap, and it pissed me off. Once we didn’t leave till 3 am and we were supposed to be closed by 10 pm but they kept letting people in. I’d never let it happen cause people are spoiled anymore and don’t deserve more than others that follow rules.

I bet your sweet mom grew up with, if you can’t say something nice then don’t say anything. Until you get walked on one time too many and watch out!! I worker retail many years and loved it but if I was going to have to give someone a hard NO I made a manager come back me up. Like a ladies mom had died and the daughter was trying to return a mixer she said had never been used, wanted cash if course. I could tell my the color it was at least 10 years old, showed her the date code, 15 years old!

I worked at shoe store in the mall, after HS. We would lower the gate when it was like a few minutes before closing, to let people know it was time to go, and other not to come in. People would still come in the store, even though they'd have to stop way down to get under the gate 🙄
