The NCAA overtime format is the worst in all of sports. The NFL is a great format. You end the game by playing more of the game. Someone is always going to have the ball last. Equal possessions are not the point of the game.

coin flip, how about play defense and stop them and score. It use to be sudden death, not if you kick a field goal the other team has chance. It’s called overtime, every other sport is sudden death overtime

I agree! I don’t get why we can’t just have another 15 min quarter, still a coin flip. Most points wins like a normal game!

NFL has it right, except both teams should be guaranteed one possession, then sudden death. NCAA loses many aspects of the game, plus you have ridiculous marathons when one team is able to match the other.

Defense is a side of the ball. It is fair. Had all game to win. Dont give up a td is fair as hell

I'm a Falcons fan and we lost the biggest game of our franchise on the OT rule. My belief is still, you have to stop the other team. I'm glad a FG doesn't end it but if you can't stop a TD that is on you. Defenders get paid too.

I’ve long said that if your overtime rules are anything other than “put more time on the clock and keep playing by the same rules,” you need to embrace the idea of ending the game in a tie. OT in basketball and the Stanley Cup (and extra innings in the MLB postseason) are perfect. NFL is almost right but has the meaningful flaw you mentioned. NCAAF format is an utter disaster. Regular season NHL 3v3/shootout, and MLB putting a runner on 2nd, are terrible. Penalty kick shootouts are dumb as hell.

Playoff OT is fine in the NFL. Regular season OT I don’t hate. The NCAA OT is moronic—they successfully did away with ties, but that’s not football.

When the NFL put in place sudden death overtime rules for regular season games, 50% were won by the team winning the coin toss, 49% by the team losing the coin toss, and 1% ended up tied. Seems pretty fair to me.
