So you are telling me that nearly 40% of fourth graders in the United States are below grade level in reading and we are solely blaming parents? It’s okay to shine a light on the public school system and wonder what the heck is going on. I saw for years my child slipping through the cracks, but now I’m taking back control. We have homeschooled for two years now and it has absolutely changed the trajectory of my child’s life.

I remember being in first grade and having to be held back bc I couldn't read bc English was my second language 🙃 and they made my feel like it was my fault dit was so emberassing having to sit on my little color square while the rest of my classmates moved on to second grade... after flunking I remember crying to my librarian and her taking time to teach me to read. Her patience made me love reading helped me learn and I became a devourer (is that a word😆) of books❤️ teacher never took

Good for you!!! I'm a retired public school teacher. I have to say our system was not broken when my children were in school but now services are depleted, curriculum is over the top for non English speaking children, poverty, little to no support for mental health issues, etc etc etc combined with grueling demands for assessment and frequent changes in programming by boards….ugh. I would probably home school too. Luckily my grandkids are in a county school, same problems but small classes.

Not all kids are designed for homeschooling, not all kids are designed for public school, not all kids are designed for private school, and not all kids are designed for boarding school. Many absolutely thrive, some don't. Good on you for recognizing the poor fit and moving to another type of schooling. As a public achool teacher, I see every day that there really are children who just are built for one-on-one education and we are beating our heads against the wall in our attempt to help them.

No it's not strictly parents fault, but there's a lot of stuff that's beyond the teacher's control too. We need to all vote to support our education system.

In the 25 years I’ve been teaching, education hasn’t changed much. The way children are being raised has changed tremendously. Studies have shown over and over that children whose parents read to them as babies/toddlers have a vocabulary tens of thousands of words larger starting kindergarten than children who do not. Reading tests are not just about reading words, they’re about reading and comprehending those words (the vocabulary). IMO this, plus technology are a huge part of the problem.
