I don’t like the variability of potential experiences. Just left an Airbnb in Rome. The front door battery to unlock died. The lock box didn’t allow my cousin to get her stuff out. Not enough toilet paper. The substandard kitchen. Not any hand towels or dish towels.

I own and operate a very busy Airbnb in Denver. I do everything I can to make sure my guests have a clean, comfortable, and convenient place to stay, with a large well-equipped kitchen, tons of linens, as well as free laundry and parking. I also communicate with them to see what they want or need. It helps that I truly want my guests to love their stay. They seem to (nearly perfect 5* rating for 8 years) so we are out there, just research carefully.

Airbnb is a platform. It’s the hosts who make or break any individual listing. Also, Airbnb’s star rating system is ridiculous. When I look to book a hotel, I can weigh a 1-10 rating against the cost of the room. On Airbnb, everything is between 4 and 5 on a 5 point scale. And you know if you’ve stayed in one the pressure you get from a host to rate them a 5 - even if you really didn’t get 5 quality out of it. Honesty would do that platform so much good.

The hidden charges are the worst.
