One of my hottest takes is that the driving exam should be WAY more difficult. I’m talking something like a 60% failure rate. Mostly for public safety reasons. Not everyone should have the right to pilot a 2-ton machine that can go 100mph

I’m the exact opposite, I think getting a license to drive a car should be a significantly easier process. Really something that just covers the basics.

The first time I took the driving test they failed me because a key on the computer stuck during the written part and answered C for half the questions. The second time they failed me because I was driving a manual and kept one hand on the gear shift and one hand on the wheel the whole time. So I did my best to keep the failure rate up.

Compulsory re-teats following any driving offences with an automatic license suspension should you fail. Re-tests every 10 years for everyone else.

There should be different tests for different cars. A basic easy test that it just the normal one that already exists that lets you drive something small and low power like a little hatchback or something, and the hardest test is the one that lets you drive a massive pickup or a ridiculously fast sports car.

That just makes people drive unlicensed. That is the way the driving exam is in Brazil, and almost a third of the drivers are unlicensed.

How do you expect 60% of people to get around? Most places in the US aren’t walkable/bikeable and have miserable public transit.

At a minimum we need mandatory continuing education and yearly retesting. And actual penalties for killing someone with your car.

Not a hot take at all. Its truth. All you need to do is drive across town to see how many people are utterly unqualified to drive. And apparently the police have just said “fuck it” as far as enforcing traffic laws goes because I see blatantly illegal shit in traffic happen right in front of them OFTEN that is completely ignored.

We need to live in walkable society with reliable and affordable (if not fully subsidized) public transport
