I know you’ve been there—you get some “bad” news: a blood test that revealed high cholesterol, critical feedback at your annual review, or a high electricity bill. So ‘will’ yourself into doing the opposite thing for the next week. You eat only vegetables, stay late at the office each night, and unplug every device in your home in an attempt to counteract the “bad” news. This knee-jerk reactive pattern, generally driven by shame, doesn’t usually result in long-term sustainable changes.
