If you plan/save plus budget you can take the extended leave (that’s what I’m doing). Do we get to go on a vacation this year? No, but it’s worth it to spend 18 months with my baby.

What I’m saying is that if you’re in a situation where you both make $100k a year (let’s say) and you both decide to take advantage of these EI benefits, and you already have a mortgage, car payment and lifestyle befitting of a $200k a year salary run rate, there’s NO way it’s possible to live on $28k a year. That’s delusional. I’m just saying, in Vancouver or Toronto, it’s impossible. Without some ridiculous top up policy that very few companies provide beyond 15 weeks.
