I'm NOT a gentle parent but, one thing I refuse to do is make my daughters pay rent when they turn 18! Y'all act like that's the only way to teach kids a sense of responsibility! We need to DO BETTER

I think it's fine to create responsibility and a sense of financial management. They pay rent but the parents put that money aside (without the child knowing). When he or she is ready to move out, then the parents give that money back so they can kickstart their life. I've been paying parental rent since I was 18. Taught me money doesn't come easy, and every expense needs to be thought through. When we're young we spend like there's a river of money flowing in...

Cool story, if you're in a financial position to do so.

Honestly, if I were to charge my kids rent it would be put aside for them for when they are ready to move out. Then they can use it to furnish their apartment or use it as a down payment I don't really care as long as it gives them a good start that's all that matters

You can practice gentle parenting and still charge rent. Also, if your child hasn't learned responsibility by 18, rent won't teach it. What do you think gentle parenting is?

My job as a parent is to teach my child responsibility from day one. My child will also understand that her parents are doing whatever we can to create as much privilege in her life. Authorized user on credit cards and college 100% paid already. My child is a toddler still, but she’ll know what we did for her to have this head start.

My kids were rent free as long as they were in school with a year after they were no longer in school to earn and save. One kid was out as soon as she finished college and moved out to do an internship which turned into a great job. My other one paid rent and saved a lot of money, he knows most of his rent is in an investment account which he can have whenever he wants it. Both are homeowners . Rules to live in our home- clean up after yourself, do a daily & weekly chore.

Have them pay you a set fee monthly. Put it in an interest bearing savings account and give it to them when they move out.

My roof and food at my table will always be open to my kids for no charge. I might change my tune if they make unwise financial decisions.

My parents charged me $100 for board a week to help prepare me for the real world then an additional $150 to be put into savings for when I officially moved out and because of that I learnt how to budget accordingly

I disagree with that. But that's your household. I teach my daughters to get themselves established, be responsible, save while they stay at home with me, so when they move out they can be efficient enough to stand on their feet and not have to come back even though the could of they needed too. But my daughters are great. They do so much for me even when I say I don't need anything .
