In 2025, let’s all agree: “dude” and “babygirl” are gender-neutral.

If I called my bros ‘babygirl’, I’m very confident I’d get the stink eye

“Dude” has always been gender-neutral. As set forth in the lyrics of our most sacred elder millennial hymn: “I’m a dude. He’s a dude. She’s a dude. We’re all dudes. Hey!”

PSA: If you use any of these terms “bro”, “dude”, “girl” to refer to a trans person, you might get ghosted. They are not gender neutral despite their usage in some contexts. They are highly gendered terms that we sometimes use loosely. Newly out trans people can be highly sensitive to that, just as gay people can be sensitive to the F-word or other terms depending on their background.

As someone who didn't grow up in America, I thought "dude" and "guys" were gender neutral. Everyone I met in America seemed to use those terms for everyone.
