1. Plastic protects the sofa and usually stays on permanently. Removing it means removing its protection and allowing it to be vulnerable to the people it encounters. Taking the plastic off means you’re taking the risk of getting it stained, ripped etc. 2. In the song Beyonce is telling the guy that she likes when he takes off his emotional protection/plastic and becomes vulnerable around her . The soft tone of the song suggests she’s handling it with care and aware of the risks he’s taking.

I think the disconnect is that many elder millennials grew up w grandparents who kept that plastic on their sofa (like, forever 😂). Many gen z dont even know the literal reference, let alone the metaphorical one. But, her impact is in leaving people curious enough to figure it out.
