Decades ago, 18 year old me went to college 1200 miles away from home. I had no idea how hard that would be, but it was made easier when my best friend’s family basically took me in as a second kid. They had (still have, as of this writing) a big old house in a small town in the plains of Illinois. That place, and that town became my second home.
