14 小時內	Ed waterboyed	Only smaller independent shops or restaurants dont take credit cards, while some opt to take Transport IC Card (eg Suica, ICOCA) instead. Most chains take credit 💳. I seldom encountered cash problem in Japan. But bear in mind that some transport systems in some smaller prefectures do not take Transport IC Card. You must be able to pay in exact change on the spot (although you may break 1000 yen bill next to the fare box).
