Women's shirts were designed for servants to button as was the custom for proper kept ladies, while men continued to dress them selves.

So many nice answers, but it has to do with medieval times. Men’s cufflinks could snag on the opening of the shirt if the buttons were on the left. And women, nurcing babies had an easier time with being modest if the buttons were on the left. Grandma had her phd in garments and taught home economics for 40 years.
