This was largely white boomer influenced. They grew up one of the most advantaged generations in American history, and all it took was a few unscrupulous men to say if everyone had those advantages, they'd lose theirs somehow. Fear is a big motivator.

I think it's because there's a bias in how we remember things. We remember better the good things and we remember as better things the bad things. So older people are going to see the past as better than the present and therefore assume the differences are to blame for this "deterioration".
