I don’t agree with it, but I understand it. People feel cheated on (by “people” I mean middle class people). The Birkin has been a status symbol to aspire to and a lot of people that can’t get there, have bought other designer bags that are a significant expense to their lifestyle, which are still status symbols. Now, they feel like that ultimate goal has been made available for anyone, making not only the Birkin, but their lower cost (compared to the Birkin) designer bags less status symbolic.
