I feel like the issues with variance could be mitigated by increasing the points to win from 3 to 4. As it is now, if you have a couple of bad turns with an ex mon in play, you p much auto-lose

That’s a big part of the issue I think, the coin tosses have a much larger relative impact because they shrank the game significantly. From 6pts -> 3pts, 60 cards -> 20 cards, 5 bench -> 3 bench, lower HP stats. A single coin flip effect’s success or failure will often decide the outcome of a game. They imported the mechanic from the main game without realizing how much adjusting it would need for a downsized game.
