Villains often are the character made to represent an opposition to the established order. Our current established order is fucked up and killing people. So villains can end up feeling more sympathetic to people because a lot of people feel powerless in the current system, and seeing someone burn it down is cathartic. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk

Because the only difference in villains and heroes are they path they chose they right villain to have dark back stories to run parallel to the hero

In the abstract, what’s the alternative? Evil for the sake of evil? The mustache twirling bad guy went out of fashion for a reason. Then you had evil but with purpose, and now we have evil with good intent. It’s just the evolution of character. A villain w/o character is Jared Leto Joker. It’s hackneyed & boring. A villain w/character is a mirror unto the hero, a perverse reflection showing what he *could* become if his morals weren’t cogent enough.

General lack of media literacy. A good villain can have all the right reasons, but just go about it the wrong way. It's why you get people who still think Thanos and Killmonger "did nothing wrong" despite both planning to or have already commited genocide

Because the villain is just as important to the story. It helps if we occasionally see something that humanizes them.

Because the villain isn't always wrong.
