genuine question, does anyone else think it's odd that mlm/gay love stories are considered to be its own genre, which has its own fandom (which seems to be a lot of straight girls ??) ? idk, it just feels weird to me :p

YES! I never understood that— like whenever people talk about top 10 romance anime or manga- I’m like why is it always only the straights? It’s like excluding the other ways in which romance can come- other types of couples— and it further reinforces the shit idea that BL/Gl is just fetish material which it is NOT (like some might be- and is problematic but so are some straight stories)

Yeah it's weird asf. Men catch so much heat for fetishising lesbians (as they should) so why do women get a pass on fetishising gay men??

I know straight women who like to watch gay porn like straight men like to watch lesbian porn. I'm a bi trans woman and the only romantic writing or sexual material I like is sapphic BDSM erotica. Hetero BDSM erotica is typically maledom(something that I don't like) and it's too hard to find hetero femdom erotica that features a trans domme. I don't really like porn(the vast majority is too male gazey) but I do like Yuri and Yaoi hentai if it's tasteful. I guess what I'm trying to say is 1/2

True, As a bi man myself I just prefer the "Queer" genre than "BL/GL" because well most written well, with the realistic love and angst

hey, i’m cal, and i’m a trans and queer man. i frequently discuss with one of my queer mentors whether libraries/bookstores should have a queer section or not. i’ve always thought—why can’t they have both? there is more than one copy of a book. they can put some in the romance aisle; some in the queer aisle. i wonder in the film industry—if we can also have both one day. i think we deserve our own genre AND to be normalised within the romance genre. that might just be wishful thinking though.

This is one of the reasons I don't like heartstopper actually. It always gave off a weird fetish feeling to me about mlm relationships. To me it seemed to cater to straight women's fetishes instead of the queer folk it claimed to be for.
