Just one generation ago in my lifetime in the United States, our parents could buy a home, buy a car, have 3 to 4 children, take annual vacations, and then retire… all on one middle-class salary. What happened? It’s like we grew down not up!!!!

5 小時內	Cecilia Wells-Williams ceil_joey	We never spent money on specialty coffees, we hardly ever ate out, maybe Whataburger, Taco Bell. There were no cell phones, must less each family now has a minimum of four, no iPads, no Mac pros, Apple Watches. That’s why we were able to buy a house and 15 yrs later pay it off. Take all the extras out of your life and you would be surprised how much money is left over at the end of the month. Also we drove used cars, never went to a dealership and bought new until we had our house paid off.

I just looked up the house in Little Rock I owned 25 years ago.. it’s about double the price in 25 years … still very affordable … I moved to where the job was and housing was affordable… as my income went up, I moved up…

For my parents it was achievable on one income. My father bought a reasonable home in 1970. My mother stayed at home. It was tight and we didn't do much fancy stuff but the schools were good and the neighborhood was nice.
12 小時內	Jim Losito jimlosito	They didn’t go out to eat, buy new cars every few years, have cell phones, Amazon deliveries, Starbucks… They actually spent every cent wisely and didn’t complain about the previous generation having an easier time. They did whatever it took to get by, and after 40 years of that, they were in decent shape.
一天內	Sam sam bookaddict3_7	I’d say it’s mainly due to the fact that most didn’t have to pay for childcare ( grandparents, aunts, cousins, or older siblings babysat or mom was a stay at home mom). they didn’t have crippling student loan debt because college was affordable up until the late 90s/early 2000s or they didn’t even attend college. Homes were also more affordable, as were groceries. Also, cars were significantly cheaper as was gas and insurance.
