yes. you do have know each of the cards’ meanings by heart. that’s just a foundation though. then learning to put together an understandable narrative based on the cards that show up and how they connect, in relation to your client’s question, using your intuition, is the real work. but memorization didn’t work for me. i just had to practice until i learned. working work a teacher helped. and now i am one myself 🫶

I think it depends on how you want to read the tarot. I did learn each of the cards by heart. But if you want to read solely intuitively, you can rely on the symbolism to guide you. Even after you know the cards, you still pick up intuitive meanings.

I know them off by heart. But it’s not at all necessary for beginners or even advanced students especially when reading for yourself. Do your reading, find the meanings and then spend time sitting with the spread. Over time the natural and necessary level of memorisation will emerge. Don’t stress about it.

no. I’ve been reading for 6+ years and I like to read cards by using my intuition to connect few key themes to the pictures, to the energy of the client, and my feelings and to the rest of the cards and contextualise it within the client’s questions. I find it more fun!!
