Best rule I was always told, there’s always a bigger fish No matter your speed there’s someone else willing to either sit at the speed limit where you aren’t or willing to break the law more Eg if you’re sat doing 80 in the right lane someone will want to be doing 90, then someone behind them will want to be doing 100

Faster than the 60MPH they’re typically doing in the middle lane, yes.

No, all because it creates more congestion because it leaves an empty lane (lane 1)

No because it impedes traffic flow.

But they are usually doing 60 then 65, then 55, then 65 etc etc. Mostly people just want to do a steady 70 and use the lanes as written in the law to achieve that.
