This law could not explain Mercury’s orbit an until Einstein theory of general relativity explained distortion of space-time by very strong gravitational fields.

What people are trying to say is that Darwin’s theory of natural selection is “just a theory”. Again, Darwin’s proposition that natural selection explains evolution has been so highly successful that it achieved the status of a scientific theory. It is the best explanation we have.
