Can Black people of Philly tell me more about the Mummers Parade? I'm sure I can google it but I want to hear the lore from y'all. A white girl tried to explain it to me once and I was lost. Of course she didn't mention any racism lol but I know people are divided about it.

She is a liar. Mummers did blackface for decades and stubbornly refused to stop and had the city government's support despite Black protest. They only recently stopped and individuals still try to do it.

I had no idea there were mummers in the states!! It’s a tradition from Ireland that is huge in Newfoundland and Labrador but I didn’t know it happened in Philly too till just now

I’m not from Philly, but I graduated high school here and have lived here for decades now. The mummers parade was always known as a white people thing. Black folks don’t usually go; if they did/do, they’re usually suburbanites or transplants or have a lots of white friends. Mummers used to have a lot of black face until they were forced to stop. Forced.

The mummers are pure trash. Working class white folks who are racist and decided to steal the culture from Mardi Gras parade around in the streets in sequins and urinate on everything from Center City to Penns Landing. Every year there is a new controversy with brigades wearing blackface as a part of their costumes.

Born and raised in South Philly. although I have been gone for around 10 years. My family and i traditionally watched the parade every year growing up. I know there is a history of racism within the organization, however as Philadelphians we still consider it part of our history.

a bunch of homophobic and racist men dress up in flamboyant outfits and play music during a parade. but they aren’t all in blackface or racist/homophobic— like there’s a punk mummers group my friends started and there are all kinds of people in that. but tbh i only went like once or twice for something to do on nys and it just wasn’t my scene. mostly due to the aforementioned racism and homophobia.

Born and raised in Philly. I always looked at it as "their" thing. I never attended or watched on TV. I am not aware of any family/friends that did either.
