Presumably Neil Young’s reaction is at least in part because of onerous terms like “actually allowing all or a significant part of your set to be broadcast at this festival you’re being paid lots of money to play at”. Last time he played his management decided song by song which could be broadcast (not one block / section of the show). In the end that amounted to only 5 songs. The Beeb got a lot of complaints, but it wasn’t their fault.

Times have changed since then and the BBC now want to be able to stream all the performances live from the stages they cover, if they can get the agreement of the acts / their management. Sometimes that isn’t possible to get full agreement on (Paul McCartney was on a 45 / 50 minute delay), but I suspect the request or requirement here was that there was an agreement in advance that the set could be broadcast in some form.

I’m a big fan of Neil Young but after seeing him the last time he was in the UK, I’m not that fussed about seeing him again. I’m happy to forgo the ten minute solos and hundred choruses of “rocking in the free world”. It felt like he was padding out his sets with long jams when all fans wanted was to hear more songs.

He wrote the songs means he can decide if they are broadcast on tv or not. It’s called copyright.

Ive played at festivals for over 25 years. They've definitely become more establishment and from a musicians perspective, the biggest ones are mostly about making money...for artists too. I'd be lying if I said I didnt like the paycheque. The broadcast rights can make the difference between breaking even and loss for organisers though. Young has earned the right to say no. Its more complicated than "corporate" though. Just business.

That’s saved the crowd a load of boring guitar solos at least

I think it’s a good thing. Artists should always have full control of their music
