That’s messed up. Privileging a kind of person. Find Dominicans. They’ll be happy to hear you try. They may teach you a ton of inappropriate words first, but you’ll have fun learning.

I once had a coworker that told me I spoke Spanish like a baby. She refused to correct me and told me to only speak to her in English. It broke my heart but it is what it is. Another coworker at the same place realized I was more of a visual learner. This person would play Spanish hangman with me. This way I was able to visualize the words but also work on my listening comprehension. It gave me so much confidence the first coworker started talking to me in Spanish.

Tip for no sabes, stop thinking of Spanish as a language you need to practice instead think of it as a language you actually speak. You don’t need validation if you’re confident. Be patient and listen to understand. Live true to your culture, and don’t imitate/cosplay. Familiarize your experience so people are also open to you. Practice around different people good or bad. It’s a culture not a social club.

People are really trying to use this as an excuse to shit on Puerto Ricans. Our Spanish is a mix of indigenous languages, African languages, Spanish and all the others influences we’ve had throughout history. Don’t shit on a whole group because of one person.
