Back in the day, I think it was an accessibility issue more than anything. Anime came on premium channels and a lot of ppl didn’t have satellite, or maybe their parents blocked them from those channels at certain times. Akira, Ninja Scroll, GITS, Princess Mononoke etc, I didn’t get bullied for watching these movies, hardly anyone knew about them.
