Authors! Im torn between wanting the accountability alpha readers provide BUT not wanting anyone to look at my first draft because, as is the case with most, it's mostly hot flamming garbage. What do I do?????? AuthorThreads

I do two full edits before anyone sees my stuff. So third draft.

I let my manuscript sit untouched for a month & write or edit something else. After a month, I do a developmental edit (I really recommend The Story Grid for that), and figure out bigger picture problems and scene issues. Then self edit via ProWritingAid and Speechify, and only then do I send it to Alpha Readers. I think a lot of Alpha readers can sense when something just doesn't work, but maybe can't exactly pinpoint what, so analysing/fixing yourself let's them focus on the story.

Maybe you need people you are willing to show hot flaming garbage to. People who will be kind but helpful.

I have one alpha and then 3 betas, my alpha helps me get things much more solid and then my betas are giving me over all feedback on phrasing and the plot and spicy scenes! :) they have been SO HELPFUL! But having the right team is so important! I told them upfront please be gentle when critiquing and don’t just say “I don’t like this” explain WHY it’s not working for you or how you think it could be worded to flow better potentially. And now I have an awesome team! :)

Alpha readers are usually people who are familiar with writing/publishing as an industry. My team of alpha readers are other authors and proofreaders. And you want them to tell you how it's garbage. That's how you make something really nice for the betas. Also, if they're writers themselves, they'll understand because they also churn out hot garbage on first draft.
