Psychotherapists are often praised for their willingness to do anything to help their clients—but here’s the catch: they’re rarely willing to advocate for changes that might reduce their own exclusivity or value. Why isn’t philosophy—arguably the birthplace of reflective dialogue—recognized as a valid foundation for psychotherapy? Socratic dialogue, with its emphasis on inquiry, meaning-making, and self-awareness, has more in common with therapy than fields like social work or education.
