I loved Romulus despite that particular line being ham-fisted and cringey. That said, the worst fan service ever is Star Trek Into Darkness. Rejigging WoKhan’s Spock death with all the bits (needs of the many, you have always been my friend) for Pine & Quinto was a cheap rehash of a legitimately emotional franchise high point played instead for unearned gravitas. And immediately negated by Kirk’s magical resurrection via Khan blood. Ack.

I really liked Romulus however it did suffer from not knowing what its identity was. It had some great moments and performances, lots of great ideas. However the fan service really made it a sore thumb. That line was pretty cringe. It was cool when Weaver did it. Not so much when you’re trying to recreate in something else.

“Get away from her, you bitch?” Is the line everyone hates? Really? The worst fan service moment ever? It was momentary and fine for me. It’s also something that anyone could literally say in that moment so it doesn’t come across as ham-fisted and unnatural.

I loved it in Romulus when Andy stood up and shouted “THIS IS ROMULUS. SHE HAS MY BACK. I WOULD ADVISE NOT GETTING KILLED BY HER. HER ROM TRAPS THE SOULS OF ITS VICTIMS”
