How do you deal with the friend who forgets they've previously told you the story they're telling you now? Do you gently remind them they told you about it or do you politely let them finish while you act like it's your first time hearing about it?

Each of us probably only has, at best, 5/6 stories max. I usually let it slide knowing full well that I’m probably someone else’s “Tells the same story over and over” person.

Who cares. Let them talk. You’re not that busy.

If i like the story ill say something like “oh i love this one!” Otherwise i just listen quietly. Honestly i should probably just be quiet either way since being told you already told this story probably throws people off 😅

I’ll just say oh yeah, I remember you told me that and then throw out some tidbits of the story to show I know it and they don’t have to repeat it, if I don’t want to hear it again. But if I do want to hear it again, I’ll just say yeah, I vaguely remember but what happened again exactly?

Ex. So like when I was a kid I got into a fight… That’s when I’d be like “oh yeah I remember you said he broke your nose right, how did that end up healing?”

Listen and be excited, then I usually go “omg yes! I remember you sayin that!” And then ask a question or make a specific comment about a part of the story.

cut in with facts about the story so their memory is jogged. I do it bc I have adhd so I like to “reset” the scene in my mind

Okay, you can say the detail you remeber to check if it's the same story, but continue to listen. Maybe there's some nuance to the story that's highlighted in its retelling. So you say, "Jim's birthday? When you wore the hat?" And they say, "Right! But did I tell you he always joked about how much that surprised him?"

I like to listen to the stories as many times as people tell them. It’s fun listening to how the story changes or stays the same. I also like to randomly throw in bits of the story like I’m guessing and then they’re like, “OMG! How did you know!” It’s fun lol
