Uncontrolled maternal diabetes causes fetal exposure to hyperglycemia and develops
hyperinsulinism which is known to disrupt lung maturation by blocking normal
surfactant phospholipid and protein synthesis; therefore, there is a decrease in
surfactant production, which leads to surfactant inadequacy and the development of
respiratory distress syndrome in the baby.
