The confidence comes from seeing people just rock up in the West with the expectation of being able to stay. It's always a shock to Westerners to find out they can't do the same elsewhere. I generally encourage living abroad for a couple of years (even if just to do ESL) - it widens your outlook, gives you appreciation of different peoples, BUT... don't expect to stay - not many places offer permanent residency or citizenship (nor should they need to).
